Interview 46: Christian Service Through the Military

Brigadier General Michael Sproul

Our subject for the podcast is the July/August edition of FrontLine Magazine, on the subject: God, the Christian, and Human Government.

In this political season, this issue of the magazine addresses many questions about the Christian relationship to government. All the articles were very thought-provoking to me.

Michael Sproul is the pastor of Littleton Baptist Church in Littleton, Colorado, but his byline in our article is "Brigadier General Michael Sproul." Besides his pastoral ministry, Mike is one of our chaplains, serving with distinction in the Air National Guard. He'll tell us a bit more about that as we begin our conversation.

The theme of Mike's article, "Christian Service Through the Military: A Baptist Perspective from Church History" dovetails nicely with the article we talked about last week with Dave Saxon on pacifism. I think you will find it a nice complement, while also taking our thinking in a different direction.

When it comes to military service, it is one thing for Baptists to generally stand against pacifism, but it is another thing to then decide whether one should then bear arms in service to one's country. Mike Sproul looks at the history of Baptist military involvement and the reasons for it.

I think you will find his thoughts interesting and helpful.
